NDIS Planning Process (part 1)

Thanks to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), eligible Australians can finally secure the support they need to thrive. Applying for the NDIS can seem a little overwhelming at first, but don't worry - we're here to help make the process as simple as possible.

There are a few steps to the official NDIS planning process that you should know about - let's look at some of them in turn.

Understanding your current support

Before you attend your planning meeting, it's useful to think about the support you currently receive and whether it's helping you. Then, consider what services and support you think you need to achieve your goals.

Preparing for your planning meeting

The better you prepare for your planning meeting, the more you'll get out of it. If you can, complete this booklet, which sets out what a typical week looks like for you. Be sure to ask a friend or family member for help completing the booklet if you're unsure how to go about it, or speak with a member of our team.

Preparing the information in this booklet helps both you and your planner quickly review your current support levels. It's an easy way for your planner to identify things that may not be working for you.

Before you attend your planning meeting, arrange for someone to attend with you for support and advice.

Attending a planning meeting to create your plan

At the planning meeting, everyone gathers together to discuss the best way forward for you. Remember, it's all about you and your specific goals, whatever these may be.

For example, perhaps you want to use public transport on your own, or you know that you're ready for your first job. Whatever your goal, the planning meeting is designed to help you achieve it by breaking objectives down into smaller, manageable steps, and giving you the support you need to reach these milestones.

Your Local Area Coordinator, ECEI Coordinator or NDIA Planner will be more than happy to answer any questions you have about the planning procedure and what happens next.
